Orientation
There are at least six navigable canals in the town. The Vadai Canal North Bank (VCNB) And South Bank (VCSB) roads and commercial Canal North Bank (CCNB) and South Bank roads run parallel to each other across the city. In the east, these canal open to the Punnamada Kayal (backwaters), thereby connecting the city to the mesh of backwater trials, which were once abuzz with traders and travelers. Follow the VCNB and VCSB roads to Alleppey's Boat Jetty on the Punnamada backwaters, crowded with numerous houseboat and backwater operators. On the western side, the canals end near the pier on Alleppey Beach. Traffic hurtles over the canals are not open to tourists, but you can stand on the edges of the traffic and watch the flight of birds, the occasional water lilies and the brilliant hues of the tropical sky reflected sometimes in the water. The names of the bridges convey an older, gentler time, when there was very little traffic, and like the disused pier, the bridges were designed for pedestrians. The railway station is in south-west Alappuzha, near the Districts Hospital.
